The Eastern
Shore Center for Independent Living. (ESCIL) opened its doors
in Cambridge, Maryland in the spring of 1999. We serve all nine
counties on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. We provide services
to all people with disabilities regardless of age, religion,
gender, ethnicity, race or national origin.
The mission of ESCIL is to reduce barriers to independent
living for individuals with significant disabilities. We are
a community based, non-residential program.
ESCIL promotes a philosophy of independent living, which
includes participant control, peer support, self-help, self-determination,
equal access and individual and systems advocacy.
Centers for Independent Living (CILs)
are staffed by people with disabilities to assist other people
with disabilities in meeting their needs. The CILs were established
for people with disabilities, they are resources for people
with disabilities, their families and the agencies within
the communities that provide services to them. As the staff
of each center consists of people with disabilities and assists
people with disabilities in helping themselves in taking charge
of their own life and remaining independent in their community.
The individual directs the services provided to them by the
CIL.
